CREATING COLOURFUL CANVASES FROM UNWANTED SCRATCH CARDS

  • Unusual and imaginative collage
  • Interesting patterns and vivid colours
  • Inspirational art from thousands of strips and torn pieces of paper
  • I like to work on ideas from my own photography

From an early age, I always preferred to see litter in bins rather than it spoiling the countryside, parks and seashore. I later realised how some of it can be recycled and this developed into a special interest exploring my own ideas in art. I began finding a use for brightly-coloured scratch cards that had been thrown away. Now I am pleased to say that some local businesses save them for me. I make them into pictures and sometimes combine them with paper wrappings or beachcombed items etc.

NEWS FOR 2019!

I have been asked by management at Pontefract Races to create collage artwork for their marketing literature in 2019 with a theme of recycling. I am using their tickets and badges from previous races.

Please see the quote below from the Pontefract Park Race Co Ltd:

‘Having seen one of James’s exhibitions at the National Coal Mining Museum, we were very excited to have the opportunity to work with him and commission some bespoke artwork to promote the 2019 racing season at Pontefract.
With a campaign geared around sustainability in mind, it was very important to us that we work with someone who is environmentally minded and the fact that James is able to create such innovative and incredible pieces of artwork using old Raceday tickets and badges is breathtaking.
We’re thrilled with the work that James has done to date and look forward to continuing our relationship with him in the future.’

MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE!

Thousands of circular pieces cut from discarded scratch cards create a colourful, striking effect…
By adding layers of cut or torn strips of scratch cards, I can create a 3D effect in my art and recently I have been experimenting with collages made from small circular pieces.
Each piece of artwork takes many hours. People ask me, “How do you have the patience?”

Here is a link to a BBC Radio York interview about my artwork.
